Heinz bodies are denatured hemoglobin inclusions visualized with supravital stains such as crystal violet or methyl violet.

Specimen Requirements
- Fresh EDTA whole blood preferred
- Process promptly for optimal staining
Analytical Method
Supravital dye stains precipitated hemoglobin as dark inclusions, often near the RBC membrane. After splenectomy, Heinz bodies are more readily seen in peripheral blood.

Normally rare/absent in intact spleen-bearing adults. Reported qualitatively or as percentage of RBCs with inclusions per laboratory method.

- Heinz bodies support oxidant/denatured hemoglobin injury when present; correlate with smear bite/blister cells and G6PD testing

- Absence does not exclude prior oxidant injury after spleen clearance
