Overview

A peripheral blood smear is a stained blood monolayer examined by microscopy (or digital morphology review) for RBC, WBC, and platelet morphology.

Specimen Requirements

  • Stability: analyze as soon as practical (many CBC parameters are stable for several hours at room temperature; verify local procedure). MPV increases with EDTA storage time. Do not freeze whole blood for CBC.
  • Prepare smears promptly; prolonged EDTA storage creates echinocytes and other artifacts
  • Fingerstick or non-anticoagulated smears may be used in selected protocols
