Section: Learning Objectives
This lesson addresses monocyte interpretation on the CBC with differential and peripheral smear, morphology, absolute counts, and pattern framing.
Each objective describes a bench competency for result verification and reportable pattern synthesis.
- Identify monocytes on Wright-Giemsa smear by size, nuclear shape, and cytoplasmic character
- Calculate and interpret absolute monocyte count on automated CBC
- Correlate monocytosis with chronic infection, inflammatory states, marrow recovery, and concerning patterns requiring hematology correlation
- Distinguish monocytes from reactive lymphocytes and immature myeloid cells on smear
- Report monocyte patterns with hedged language appropriate to morphology and clinical context
