Legionella urinary antigen tests detect soluble antigen excreted in urine, predominantly from L. pneumophila serogroup 1.

Analytical Method
Immunochromatographic or EIA methods capture Legionella antigen in urine. Positive results support L. pneumophila sg1 infection; culture/PCR are needed for non-sg1 species/serogroups.

Reference Values

Expected: antigen not detected. Positive predictive value rises with compatible clinical syndrome.

- Antigen detected; supports Legionnaires’ disease due to L. pneumophila sg1; still pursue culture/PCR when speciation or non-sg1 disease is possible

- Antigen not detected; does not exclude non-serogroup-1 Legionella or early disease
