Specimen Requirements
- Specimen: whole blood inoculated into aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles (volume per manufacturer/age protocol)

Analytical Method
Aerobic and anaerobic bottles (and specialized bottles when indicated) are incubated in automated continuous-monitoring systems that detect CO₂ or other metabolic signals. Positive bottles undergo Gram stain, subculture, identification (often MALDI-TOF), and AST.

Critical and significant-risk microbiology findings (e.g., positive blood culture, CSF pathogen) follow institutional urgent-notification pathways. Confirm the local call list. Textbook examples are not universal thresholds.
