Section: Learning Objectives
Each objective below describes a transfusion-service laboratory competency, investigating and interpreting adverse transfusion reactions, not delivering bedside treatment.
- Explain why hemolysis must be excluded before an urticarial/pruritic reaction is attributed to a routine allergic mechanism
- Describe the laboratory's history and product-review actions for a suspected allergic transfusion reaction, prior reaction history, plasma content of the implicated component, and any documented sensitivities
- Distinguish a routine (mild, localized) allergic transfusion reaction from a presentation severe enough to warrant escalation toward the anaphylaxis workup pathway
