Throat culture inoculates pharyngeal swabs to media that recover group A Streptococcus and other organisms specified by laboratory protocol.

Analytical Method

Swabs are plated to blood agar (± selective strep media). Beta-hemolytic colonies are identified as S. pyogenes by Lancefield grouping, PYR, MALDI-TOF, or equivalent. Many laboratories use rapid antigen or NAAT as primary tests with culture backup policies.

Reference Values

Microbiology results are interpreted against organism identification, specimen quality, clinical context, and current CLSI and/or EUCAST interpretive criteria (including CLSI M100 for susceptibility where adopted). Reporting conventions and critical-notification lists are institution-defined; verify against the performing laboratory SOP and current guideline editions.

Expected: no group A Streptococcus (and no other reportable pathogens on the ordered panel).
