Section: Learning Objectives
Each objective below describes a transfusion-service laboratory competency, product integrity, labeling, storage, and issue practice first; clinical treatment protocols second.
- Describe whole blood as the unseparated donor collection and explain, in general terms, why most collections are subsequently processed into individual components
- Apply labeling, cold-chain, and visual-inspection checks the laboratory must confirm before a whole blood unit is stored, transported, or issued
- Explain why storage in a non-validated or non-monitored refrigerator is a laboratory hard stop for a whole blood unit, independent of how urgently a patient needs blood
