Section: Learning Objectives
Each objective below describes a transfusion-service laboratory competency, investigating and interpreting adverse transfusion reactions, not delivering bedside treatment.
- Explain the anamnestic (secondary) alloantibody response that underlies most delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions and why it produces a delayed, rather than immediate, laboratory picture
- Interpret the delayed-reaction workup panel, antibody screen and identification, DAT, and elution, and recognize the findings pattern that supports DHTR
- Distinguish a delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction (DHTR, laboratory evidence of hemolysis) from a delayed serologic transfusion reaction (DSTR, new antibody without clinical/laboratory hemolysis)
